Investigation on a commercial plastic sample

Lab analysis

The client company wanted to know in detail the composition of a plastic sample, including fillers and additives.

Targets of the project

Target 1

Polymer phases identification.

Target 2

For the identification of fillers

Target 3

Investigation of the components of the compound at concentration <5%

The client company provided the results of some analyzes already carried out internally, including DSC, FTIR and TGA. Based on this information, it was possible to identify with certainty the polymeric phases present and their relative abundance.

The ashes of the polymer were subjected to SEM / EDX and XRD analysis. The cross results made it possible to identify with certainty the fillers present and their concentration.

To investigate even the lower concentration components, which tend to escape conventional techniques, an NMR analysis was performed. This type of analysis made it possible to identify each hydrogen atom belonging to a different molecule, even at very low concentrations.

  • Target 1

    Interpretation of routine analyses

The client company provided the results of some analyzes already carried out internally, including DSC, FTIR and TGA. Based on this information, it was possible to identify with certainty the polymeric phases present and their relative abundance.

  • Target 2

    Analysis on ashes

The ashes of the polymer were subjected to SEM / EDX and XRD analysis. The cross results made it possible to identify with certainty the fillers present and their concentration.

  • Target 3

    Identification of additives

To investigate even the lower concentration components, which tend to escape conventional techniques, an NMR analysis was performed. This type of analysis made it possible to identify each hydrogen atom belonging to a different molecule, even at very low concentrations.

Result

The customer received a complete description of each component of the sample sent, extremely quickly considering the type of work required, and with great accuracy regarding the final results.
